Pete Hegseth Confirmed as Defense Secretary After Tie-Breaking Vote by Vice President JD Vance

Vice President JD Vance swore in Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary after a highly contentious Senate vote concluded late Friday. The confirmation required Vance to cast a historic 51-50 tie-breaking vote, following a deeply divided process.

Hegseth, a former military officer and television personality, has pledged to transform the Department of Defense. In his confirmation hearing, he vowed to eliminate "woke policies" and streamline Pentagon bureaucracy, emphasizing a return to a "warrior culture."

The confirmation process was fraught with controversy. Hegseth faced allegations of sexual misconduct, financial mismanagement, and excessive drinking, which drew sharp criticism from both parties. GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, and former GOP Leader Mitch McConnell broke ranks to vote against his nomination, joining Democrats in opposition.

Despite the pushback, Hegseth secured his position thanks to Vice President Vance, who made history by casting the deciding vote. This marks only the second time a vice president has broken a Senate tie to confirm a Cabinet nominee.

Hegseth’s confirmation is expected to have significant implications for the Department of Defense’s policies, with a focus on reducing bureaucracy and fostering military readiness.
